Disc 1 (Double DVD) - 1965 v Kerry
For the first time since 1941, the same two counties competed in successive finals. But after the free-flowing match the year before, this year was marred by constant fouling and 3 dismissals. The fact that 12 of the 21 points were scored from frees tells its own story. With a 3 point victory Galway won their second All-Ireland title in a row.
1966 v Meath
The defending champions were unbeaten since the 1963 All-Ireland final with Dublin and Meath had put in an incredible second-half performance against Down in the semi-final to win by ten points. Inspired by legendary goalkeeper Johnny Geraghty, the Tribesmen won a historic 3-in-a-row and marksman Mattie McDonagh also became the first (and last) Connacht man to win four All-Ireland medals.
Disc 2 (Double DVD) - 1998 v Kildare
Kildare were marginal favourites after beating reigning champions Kerry plus the 1996 and 1995 champions, Meath and Dublin respectively, on the way to the final. Galway started well but a Dermot Earley goal kept Kildare in the hunt. Michael Donnellan’s great solo run (a moment of true GAA magic) sparked a Galway win and their first title in 32 years.
2001 v Meath
The 2001 Championship was the first to feature the qualifying system and Galway, who had lost to Roscommon in the Connacht Championship semi-final, became the first side to contest an All-Ireland Final having not won their provincial championship. Surprising many, The Maroon 15 won their second title in four years. Remarkably, neither side has contested a final since.
Disc 3 - 1980 v Limerick
In the second ever final meeting between the two counties, Galway won the first to claim their second All-Ireland title. Limerick were seeking their eight title but their first since beating Kilkenny in 1973. Galway raced to a 2-1 to zero lead before Limerick’s Eamonn Cregan scored 1-2 in quick succession. At half-time Galway were ahead and in the 2nd half withstood the pressure and matched every score of the Shannonsiders in a pulsating contest.
Disc 4 - 1987 v Kilkenny
In the 100th All Ireland hurling final, Galway won their first title in seven years. In a magnificent game Noel Lane’s late goal sealed victory for the Westerners on a Croke Park pitch that had been repaired after U2 summer concerts.Galway's Joe Cooney also won the Texaco Hurler of the Year.
Disc 5 - 1988 v Tipperary
Masterminded by manager Cyril Farrell, captain Conor Hayes lifted the Liam MacCarthy Cup for a second successive year. The win was built on Galway’s resolute defence who kept Tipp’s Nicky English and Pat Fox quiet on the day. Noel Lane scored a crucial second half goal as the Munster champions were beaten by the heroes of Galway in a game packed with great scores, skill and drama.
