When Galway led 1-4 to 0-5 at half-time, the Maroon 15 looked favourites to win the trophy they lost the year before. That even looked more likely when they won a penalty in the second half but Paddy Cullen saved to ignite The Hill and inspire Kevin Heffernan’s team to a brilliant comeback.
Disc 2 - 1976 v Kerry
Defending champions Kerry had a resounding win in the semi-final over Derry 5-14 to 1-10 and were hot favourites against the team that had beaten Galway by only a single goal on the way to the final. But it was The Dubs - with Texaco Footballer of the Year Jimmy Keaveney leading the line - that triumphed on the day.
Disc 3 - 1977 v Kerry(21st of August)
The All-Ireland semi-final meeting between these two fierce rivals has been described as the greatest game of all time. The non-stop action flowed from end to end as this thriller of a contest unfolded. Two late goals clinched it for the Dubs with first Tony Hanahoe and later Bernard Brogan finishing off a brilliant move. Dublin was through to their 3rd final in four years.
Disc 4 - 1977 v Armagh
This was Armagh's second ever All-Ireland football final - their previous appearance was in 1953. On the other hand Dublin had appeared in the previous three finals, winning two (1974 & ’76). Dublin retained the Sam Maguire Trophy and the combined eight goals is a record shared in 1948 as the most scored in a final. The winning score remains the highest in the history of the championship.
Disc 5 - 1983 v Galway
Called the Game of Shame, four players (3 Dublin, 1 Galway) were sent off within five minutes of the second half. The controversy around the game overshadowed the Dubs’ great achievement as the ’12 Apostles’ held out against 14-man Galway for a superb win.
